The Lions Club of St. Andrew is partnering with the Diabetes Association of Jamaica (DAJ to raise funds to buy two needed Dialysis machines for their Renal Unit to cater to the needs of their patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). The DAJ was founded in 1976 by the Lions Club of Kingston and St. Andrew.
For 43 years the DAJ has been providing diabetes care for those in need. The DAJ is a charity that has the responsibility for developing and implementing a nationwide plan for diabetic treatment, education, and training and was set up to provide diabetes education and care to the public. The DAJ functions through the work of volunteers. Roughly 10 per cent of Jamaica’s population, or approximately 300,000 persons, suffer from diabetes, and every year roughly 1,000 new patients require dialysis. Currently, an average of 60 patients receive dialysis at the DAJ every month. Dialysis is a high-maintenance operation and Dialysis Machines eventually become unserviceable or obsolete over the years. This has become the fate of two of the machines at the DAJ and raising funds to replace them is the focus of this fundraising campaign.
