St. Elizabeth - Marie Cole Memorial Primary

A Stronger Nation Begins With A Pledge

The Marie Cole Memorial Primary School is nestled at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountain approximately three (3) miles south of the town of Santa Cruz within the farming community of Burnt Ground.  The school which was established in 1968 is built on approximately three (3) acres of land that was donated to the Jamaican Government by the Cole family for the construction of a school in memory of their mother Mrs. Maria Cole a former educator.  The school was constructed by the Canadian Government.

The livelihood of the people within the community is chiefly dependent on the crops planted and livestock reared and traded within the local market of Santa Cruz.

The school was built to accommodate approximately one hundred and seventy (170) students. However, there are currently an enrolment of one hundred and ninety three (193) girls and one hundred and ninety three (193) boys totalling three hundred and eighty six (386) students.

The school, over recent years, has undergone several changes and improvement.  The school was repaired and flush toilet facilities were put in place by the Ministry of Education.  The zinc roofing was redone, however, from the moment of completion whenever it rains some areas leaks damaging the plies used as matting for the roof.  There has also been an amplification of the noise level within that section of the building whenever the students are inside.

The main building has eight (8) classes from grade 2 to 5.  Grade six which is subdivided into three (3) classes is occupies a building that was originally constructed as a resource room and a bus that was refabricated into a classroom.

The staff consists of thirteen (12) classroom teachers a guidance counsellor and a principal.  The board of the school is fully constituted and there is an active PTA body.

There has always been a mutual relationship between the school and the community it serves.  Functions and events hosted by the school are always well supported.  The school occasionally receives assistance in cash and stationary to assist with its programmes

There is a small computer lab with ten (10) outdated desktop computers, however of the ten (10) only one (1) is in good working condition. The school is on the “tablets In School Project” with Internet access available to each class. Teachers are also able to utilize laptops and other available technology in their lessons.

Students are exposed to extracurricular activities such as 4H club, scouting, science and environmental club, bible club, culture club, football and cricket and farming.

How will the funds be used?

The Pledge2Build campaign was developed to raise funds for capital improvement of early childhood and primary institutions across Jamaica. This is to ensure that the schools are safe and provide children with a conducive learning environment.

The funds raised will be used to carry out the following scope of works at the school:
